Laos Natural Forest Teas -Laos is famous for hundred of years because of its high mountains, deep plush forests, pure spring water, and clean healthy environment. In this pure organic environment natural forest tea trees have grown for hundreds of years. In the 12 th Century AD…the natural teas from Laos were sent to the Chinese Imperial Court as “Tribute Tea” for many years. Now these same natural forest teas from northern Laos are available to tea consumers from Asian Natural Products or Lao Teas and Natural Products. This company selects and purchases high quality green and black teas from mountain areas nearby to Yunnan Province of China. The company purchases teas processed by local poor minority farmers at mountains 900-1400 meters high. The tea is from natural forest tea trees and the soil and product is pure and organic. Our company provides fair prices to farmers, trains farmers including women on quality tea cultivation and processing methods. We also provide basic school books on literacy and numeracy to local village schools and provide teacher training for our corporate social responsibility. Our tea prices are reasonable and the taste of the teas is superior and natural.

The Story and Motivation for Lao Tea and Natural Products.

This small business and social enterprise is the result of field work in highland rural development projects in Phong Saly and Xieng Khoung provinces by the founder in learning from local people and villagers that tea and other rural products were a suitable crop for farm families to overcome poverty and protect the ecology.

The teas from both Phong Saly and Xieng Khoung provinces are mainly from natural ancient tea trees 100-400 years old or from cultivated local teas (Puer) and from tea gardens on planted using the seeds from the ancient trees.

Story of Lao Tea and Natural Products

Lao Tea and Natural Products is the result and outcome of rural development programs in Phong Saly Province starting from 2000.  Puer tea varietal were one viable upland and highland crop with market demand from China and with good growing conditions and chosen by the villagers. The purpose of the company and related social enterprise is to source four Puer tea varieties from mountain villages to enable the villagers to have sustainable markets with fair trade prices and organic and natural certifications.  Part of the proceeds from tea or natural products sales will fund community village improvements such as schools, student dormitories, village medic supplies and scholarships for ethnic villagers.

The efforts of the company are in coordination with local Lao Government authorities to ensure understanding and shared objectives to assist poor highland villages with sustainable social and economic development in distant areas while protecting the natural environment.

Phong Saly Province, Laos. Mountains and Forests Forever

Phong Saly Province is the northern most province of Laos, bordering on China on the north and west and Vietnam on the east.  The China border is with Yunnan Province, ancestral home of Puer Tea. Puer Tea grows well in Phong Saly since the climate and soils are similar to Yunnan Province.
All Puer tea grown in Phong Saly is organic and natural.  Mountain scene here is at Boonneua District Phong Saly, top is about 1400 meters or 4200 feet above sea level, altitude. Photo taken in February 2011 by Mike Carroll.

Phong Saly "Sea of Clouds and Mist"

Typical of the weather is a shifting sea of clouds and mists especially in the winter from November to March each year.  Cloud cover and mists roll over valleys, streams, rivers, and mountain top villages.  The clouds make for a beautiful panorama and ideal conditions for tea growing.
